The Matsuo Washi factory, next to the Yabe River for over a century, is in its fourth generation of family ownership. Working as a photographer, Shigeyuki Matsuo learned the pleasure of craftsmanship. But at the same time, as many people told him how precious and rare his family business was, he was finally persuaded to return to his hometown and succeed his father as the factory’s head.He now works with his family and two craftswomen, sisters in their early 70’s, who have worked side-by-side as papermakers for over 50 years. Together, the group makes just over 300 sheets each a day.”Nowadays,” Mr. Matsuo says, “handmade paper is a luxury item, a difference from the past when it was something essential and consumable. But you understand the real taste of Washi by using it daily.”
